I am an ecologist and conservation biologist focusing on many aspects of biodiversity science, particularly resilience to global change. Much of my work is in tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, where I study the ecology, evolution, and conservation of mammals and plants. My work straddles basic ecology and applied conservation, for example assessing how climate change, habitat alteration, and exploitation (e.g., "bushmeat" hunting) affect wildlife populations, community and ecosystem dynamics, and the ecology and evolution of species interactions.
A large collaboration that I helped co-lead recently finalized plans for a suite of new protected areas in the state of Sabah, Malaysia. At the request of the Sabah Forest Department, we analyzed data on biodiversity, forest carbon, and landscape connectivity to determine the optimal sites for conservation areas that will increase the state's terrestrial protected area coverage by ~300,000 ha. We are now using similar analyses to help the state of Perak, Malaysia, identify areas for reforestation and new protected areas, with the goal of securing the state's tiger population and forest carbon stocks.
I am an elected councilor for the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation (ATBC), and part of the association's Conservation and DEI committees. I serve on the IUCN species survival commission, world commission on protected areas, and multiple taxonomic and thematic specialist groups. I was a David H. Smith Conservation Fellow and a Fulbright Research Fellow to Malaysia.
